Saw where you gently shook your scanner and the volume increased again. Did a forum search for low volume issues and came across this thread. I have been reorganizing my shack the past few days, and when I turned on the 197 today, the audio was very low, even with the volume cranked up all the way. Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but I was wondering if you were able to permanently fix the problem? I ask because I came into possession of a PRO-197 last week and the audio was working fine when I first brought it home. Am I missing something obvious here or does it sound like the scanner needs to be returned? I appreciate the feedback. If it matters, I have used the free 30 day trial of Win-500 to program it thus far. I tried plugging earphones in and while it became easier to hear, I still had the volume cranked all the way to max and could tell that the scanner wasn't putting out the correct amount of audio. I have played with all of the logical settings and nothing has changed. I have rolled the firmware back to an earlier version and reset the scanner to no avail. The volume that the radio is putting out with the knob pinned to the right is probably what it should be at about 1/4 of the way turned up. Its to the point now on conventional channels (I haven't tried any digital systems since noticing the problem got worse) I have the volume turned all the way up and I almost have to strain to hear it. Tonight I noticed that the audio on the scanner is even worse. This was not only on digital but mostly on conventional channels. I used the scanner for a couple of hours and everything seemed to be working fine, although the audio seemed a bit weak to me (I had the volume turned up relatively high and felt that the audio was not as strong as it should be). One of the first things I did was update the firmware.
